Plaza Concejil / Puerto de la Cruz

Este agradable rincón portuense, se encuentra situado en una encrucijada de calles, ahora peatonales. En la parte central de la plaza, existía antiguamente un pozo de agua, del que se abastecían los vecinos del lugar.

Un monumento erigido en honor a D. Francisco Afonso Carrillo, que fuera alcalde de la ciudad y posteriormente Gobernador civil de la provincia, preside este tranquilo espacio.

La plaza, situada en pleno casco histórico, esta flanqueada por diversos edificios de cierta importancia, entre ellos la Casa Iriarte, donde nacieron los hermanos Iriarte y Nieves Ravelo, destacados personajes de la ilustración española, el Convento de los Hermanos de la Cruz Blanca, que fue antiguo colegio para chicas, conocido como la “Pureza” y que hoy día sirve como centro de asistencia social a manos de una orden franciscana. También en esta bonita plaza, tiene lugar cada Domingo de Ramos, la bendición de las palmas.

CONCEJIL SQUARE

This pleasant spot in the port is situated at a crossroads of pedestrian walkways. Originally in the centre of the square there was a well which supplied fresh water to the local residents.

A bust in honour of Don Francisco Afonso Carrillo, former Mayor of the town and Civil Governor of the province, presides over this tranquil setting.

The square, situated in the heart of the old quarter, is flanked by important buildings from a past era. Among them are Casa Iriarte, birthplace of the Iriarte sisters and Nieves Ravelo, famous Spanish personalities from The Age of Enlightenment and the Convent of the Sisters of the White Cross, a former girls’ school called “La Pureza”, used today as a social services centre run by a Franciscan order.

During Easter, the blessing of the palms is celebrated on Palm Sunday in this beautiful square.
CONCEJIL PLATZ

Diese einladende Ecke Puertos befindet sich an einer, heute in Fußgängerzone umgewandelten Straßenkreuzung. Einst befand sich in seiner Mitte ein Tiefbrunnen, der die Bewohner der Umgebung mit Wasser versorgte.Hier werden jedes Jahr am Palmsonntag die Palmenzweige geweiht.

Das Denkmal zu Ehren des ehemaligen Bürgermeisters der Stadt und Zivilgouverneurs der Provinz, D. Francisco Afonso Carillo, bereichert diese ruhige Zone.
Der Platz ist von markanten Gebäuden umrahmt, unter anderem dem Geburtshaus der Gebrüder Iriarte y Nieves Ravelo, beides bedeutende Persönlichkeiten der spanischen Literatur.Das Kloster der Bruderschaft des weißen Kreuzes war einst eine Mädchenschule, bekannt als “La Pureza”, und dient heute als Sitz der sozialen Hilfe des Franziskanerordens.
