El padre dominico, Pedro Gonzalez Telmo, más conocido como San Telmo, se dice, fue un hombre milagroso que con sus predicaciones y sermones, conseguía que los pescadores gallegos del río Miño, tuvieran una buena faena. Con el tiempo todos los marineros españoles, le rezaban como a su Santo Patrón, ofreciéndole pequeñas maquetas de sus barcos, para solicitar de esta manera, su ayuda en la lucha diaria con el bravo elemento.
La ermita de San Telmo, hoy convertida en lugar de culto para la comunidad católica de habla alemana, alberga en su interior una imagen del Santo, que data de finas del siglo XVIIII y que es junto a la imagen de la Virgen del Carmen, sacada en procesión cada año en las fiestas mayores de la ciudad, que se celebran en el mes de Julio.
En 1826, una gran marea destruyó gran parte de la edificación y no fue hasta el año 1880, que se restauró por la comisión episcopal de arte y con la ayuda de los vecinos. Más tarde la misma comisión de arte y el secretario de los católicos de Bonn, remodelaron gran parte del interior de la ermita.
ERMITA DE SAN TELMO (St. Telmo’s Chapel)
One of the town’s most famous landmarks is without doubt the little chapel of San Telmo, built in 1870 by Dominican Monks and the seaman’s guild (sailors and fishermen).
It is believed that the Dominican priest Pedro Gonzalez Telmo, better known as Saint Telmo, was able to perform miracles with his predictions and sermons, making it always possible for Galician fishermen to have a fruitful catch.
Soon all Spanish sailors would come and pray to St. Telmo at this famous church when they docked in Puerto de le Cruz, bringing with them small models of their ships as an offering when asking for help with their daily battle with the harsh seas.
Today the Ermita de San Telmo has been converted into a church for the German speaking Catholic community and inside it is still home to the figure of the Patron Saint dating from the late XVII Century. During the July celebrations the fisherman’s patron saint Our Lady of Carmen and St. Telmo are carried out to sea on small boats in one of the town’s biggest fiestas.
In 1826 a huge wave destroyed a large part of the church and it was not until 1880 that it could be restored by the Episcopal art commission together with the help of the local community.
Later in 1968, the same art commission and the foreign secretary for the Catholics from Bonn restored most of the interior.
SAN TELMO KAPELLE
Als einer der markanten Punkte der Stadt hebt sich die kleine San Telmo Kapelle hervor.Sie wurde im Jahre 1870 von Dominikanerpatern und mit Hilfe der “Mareantes” (Personen, welche ihren Unterhalt von den Erträgen des Meeres bestreiten), Seeleuten und Fischern, erbaut.Der Sage nach war der Pater Pedro Gonzalez Telmo,besser als San Telmo bekannt, jemand der mit Predigten und Gebete Wunder vollbringen konnte.Es hiess,dass er dadurch den Fischern des Miño-Flusses in Nordspanien einen besonders ertragreichen Fischfang ermöglicht hatte.
Im Laufe der Zeit beteten die spanischen Seeleute ihn als ihren Schutzpatron an und brachten ihm kleine Modelle ihrer Boote ,um für Hilfe bei ihrem täglichen Kampf mit den rauhen Elementen des Meeres zu erbitten.
Die San Telmo Kapelle dient heute der deutschsprachigen katholischen Gemeinschaft und beherbergt in ihrem Inneren eine Figur des Heiligen, welche aus etwa Ende des XVIII Jahrhunderts stammt. Diese wird jährlich zusammen mit dem Standbild der Gottesmutter während der Julifeste zu Prozessionen hervorgeholt.
Ein heftiger Seegang im Jahre 1826 fügte dem Gebäude einen großen Schaden zu und erst um 1880 wurde es durch den bischöflichen Kunstausschuß und durch Spenden der Nachbarn wieder aufgebaut.
Später, im Jahre 1988, war es der gleiche Kunstausschuß und das Sekretariat für auswärtige katholische Angelegenheiten Bonns, welche einen Umbau des Inneren der Kapelle finanzierten.
